Position Summary
The Mental Health Analytics & Reporting Service Unit (MHARSU) of the Australian Institute of Health and
Welfare (AIHW) is responsible for a range of data analysis and reporting functions, including production of
the Mental health services in Australia report.
The MHARSU is looking for an experienced Data Analyst and Research Officer who are passionate about
improving mental health and welfare data, reporting and want to be involved in the expansion of the mental
health work program. This program is broad and includes analysis and reporting on mental health-related
data including the national mental health data collections, hospitals data, MBS and PBS. New work programs
will involve the development of an enhanced data analytics capability including linked data development and
analysis.
The Unit have the following two position vacancies:
Senior Data Analyst
There is an opportunity for a talented and motivated Data Analyst to join the Analytics Team in the MHARSU.
The Analytics Team is responsible for a range of activities including undertaking analysis for the Mental health
services in Australia report, international mental health reporting for the OECD, undertaking complex and
exploratory analysis on a range of health and welfare data collections, and analysis of linked data
collections—including the National Integrated Health Service Information (NIHSI) linked data asset.
Senior Research Officer
There is an opportunity for a talented and motivated Research Officer to join the Reporting Team in the
MHARSU. The Reporting Team is responsible for a range of activities including data analysis, data
visualisation, report preparation and web content development for the Mental health services in Australia
report and other mental health-related publications, including the AIHW’s flagships reports—Australia’s
health and Australia’s welfare.
Both roles will also involve other tasks relevant to the mental health work program as required.

Selection Criteria
Our ideal candidates will have most, or all, of the following skills and knowledge:
1. Well-developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the demonstrated ability to:
o Senior Data Analyst – Investigate and interrogate data sets using SAS or other data analysis
and visualisation tools such as SQL, R, Python and/or Tableau.
o Senior Research Officer – Undertake research and synthesise information from a range of
sources (including academic research and grey literature) to produce high quality written
work in a range of formats.
2. Well-developed liaison and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with
internal and external clients and work within, and contribute to, a team.
3. Sound organisational skills, including the demonstrated ability to determine priorities, manage
projects and workflows, and meet deadlines.
Desirable
4. High-level SAS and/or SQL programming skills (Data Analyst role).
5. Experience as a CMS author/understanding of website content management (Research Officer role).
6. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant health or welfare discipline, previous experience in a role
involving data development, collation and/or research analysis and reporting, or subject matter
expertise relevant to the role.
